Grandma Betty's was founded by Kataja Marie, who draws her inspiration from her own lived experience of parental incarceration. Raised by her grandmother, Betty Jean Stoffer, while both of her parents were incarcerated, Kataja intimately understands the challenges and struggles faced by children with incarcerated parents and their caregivers. It is her personal journey, guided by the unwavering love and support of Grandma Betty, that fuels her passion to make a difference in the lives of others facing similar circumstances. Through Grandma Betty's, Kataja is dedicated to honoring her grandmother's legacy and paying forward the compassion and resilience that shaped her own life, by providing hope, healing, and support to families impacted by incarceration.
I recall my Grandma passing around a collection plate after choir rehearsal some weekdays to support my siblings and I. It was embarrassing at the time, but it showed me humility and the importance of community.
